European R&D grants – Horizon 2020 programme
Funding the technologies of tomorrow

What is Horizon 2020?
Horizon 2020 is the main funding programme managed by the European Union that runs from 2014 to 2020, and provides an estimated €80 billion of funding. The objective is to finance initiatives and support R&D projects, technological development and added-value innovation in the European Union.

The programme is designed to support European R&D strategies, and contributes directly to research in areas considered to be the main challenges to society. It also seeks to create and maintain European industrial leadership, and support scientific excellence.

How is Horizon 2020 organized?

The programme consists of three main research areas:

  • Industrial leadership: this pillar aims at boosting the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), nanotechnologies, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing/processing and aerospace. It also includes special focus on SMEs with the “SME Instrument” programme.
  • Societal challenges: the goal is to fund direct solutions to political priorities and European issues such as security, energy, transport, climatic change, health, environment and land management.
  • Excellent science: the third pillar focuses on basic science and funds future and emerging technologies, researcher mobility and large European research infrastructures.

How much funding can projects receive?

  • Research and development activities at the EU funding rate (100%)
  • Innovation activities at the EU funding rate (70%)
  • Coordination and support activities at the EU funding rate (100%)

In addition to H2020 other European funding programmes may meet your project’s needs:
